Moroccan Black Soap (Beldi): What It Is and How to Use It
What Moroccan Beldi black soap is, how it differs from African black soap, and how to use it the right way in your hammam ritual.

În acest articol
In short: Moroccan black soap, called Beldi, is a soft soap with a paste texture, made from olives. You don't use it like a regular shower gel: you massage it onto damp skin, then rinse it off completely. It's the step that prepares your skin for exfoliation with the kessa glove.
What Moroccan black soap is
Beldi means "traditional" or "homemade" in the Arabic spoken in Morocco. Beldi soap is made from olives and has a paste texture, different from bar or liquid soaps. The dark color and the natural, slightly olive scent come straight from the ingredients, not from added fragrance.
In the Moroccan hammam, it's the first product you put on your skin, after time in the steam.
Moroccan black soap or African black soap?
They often show up together on Google, but they're different products.

| What it's made of | Olives | Usually plant ash and plant oils (e.g. shea butter) |
| Texture | Soft paste, like a gel | Solid, like a bar of soap |
| How to use it | Massage onto damp skin, rinse, then exfoliate | Like a regular soap |
| Role in the hammam | Prepares the skin for the kessa glove | Not part of the Moroccan hammam |
How to use Beldi soap, step by step
- Spend 10 minutes in the heat. A shower as hot as you like, or a bath. Your skin should be damp and softened.
- Take a little soap. About a teaspoon is enough for your whole body. The formula is concentrated.
- Massage it onto damp skin. No need for much lather. It's normal for it not to foam like a shower gel.
- Rinse it off completely. Then move on to exfoliating with the kessa glove.
Why rinsing it off completely matters
Beldi soap prepares your skin for the glove. You don't need to leave it on: you massage it onto damp skin and rinse it off completely. If soap stays on your skin, the glove slides and can't grab the dead skin.
"It's the step that prepares your skin for the glove."
Scent and texture: different, not wrong
If you're used to scented shower gels, Beldi will seem strange the first time. That's normal, because it's a different kind of product:
- The scent is olive, slightly earthy, because there's no fragrance on the ingredient list. It goes away when you rinse and doesn't stay on your skin.
- The texture is a dense paste, like a firm gel. It doesn't foam and doesn't spread like a shower gel.
How to spread it easily: take a small amount, warm it for a few seconds between wet palms and spread it on wet skin, not dry skin. If it's hard to spread, add a little more water to your skin, not more soap.
How to store it
Keep the jar tightly closed, away from the shower water. Use dry hands or a teaspoon so no water gets into the jar. One jar lasts for many rituals, because you need very little each time.
Frequently asked questions
Moroccan black soap has a strong scent. Is that normal?
Yes. It's the natural olive scent of the traditional recipe, with no added fragrance. It doesn't stay on your skin after rinsing.
Why is Beldi soap hard to spread?
Because it's a concentrated paste. Warm a small amount between wet palms and apply it to wet skin. If it's still hard to spread, add a little water.
Can I use Beldi soap every day?
You can also use it as a body soap, but its main role is in the exfoliation ritual, once a week.
Is Moroccan black soap good for hair?
It isn't made for hair. For hair and scalp, the hammam uses ghassoul clay.
How long do I leave it on my skin?
You don't need to leave it on. Apply it to damp skin, massage gently and rinse it off completely with warm water. If you're also using the kessa glove, use it after you've rinsed.
