In short: pure argan oil has a single ingredient on the label, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil. It's golden yellow, smells faintly nutty and absorbs without leaving your skin sticky. If you see silicones, fragrance or other oils before argan on the ingredient list, it isn't pure argan oil. A very low price is also a bad sign, because argan is hard to produce.

Why there's so much fake argan oil

The argan tree grows almost only in southwestern Morocco, and its area is a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The fruit is harvested, dried and cracked to get the kernels out, and the oil is pressed from the kernels. A single liter of oil takes dozens of kilograms of fruit and a lot of work, much of it still done by hand.

That's why pure argan is expensive. And that's why a lot of "argan" oil is sold with very little argan in it, or none at all.

How to recognize pure argan oil: 7 checks

1. The ingredient list has a single line

This is the most reliable check. On any cosmetic, ingredients are listed by their international name (INCI), in order of quantity. For pure argan oil, the list should contain only Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil.

If the first ingredients are Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone or other silicones, it's a hair serum with a little argan. If you see Parfum, Helianthus Annuus (sunflower), Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (almond) or Simmondsia Chinensis (jojoba), it's a blend of oils.

2. It says "cold-pressed"

Good cosmetic oil is made by cold-pressing, with no heat and no solvents. That's how it keeps its vitamin E and fatty acids. On the label, look for "cold-pressed".

3. The color is golden yellow

Cosmetic argan oil is golden yellow, from light to medium. An almost clear oil has probably been refined or blended. A dark brown one is usually culinary argan oil, made from roasted kernels. That one is great in a salad, but it isn't made for your skin.

4. The scent is faint, slightly nutty

Cold-pressed cosmetic argan has a subtle, slightly plant-like, nutty scent. A strong, sweet scent means fragrance was added. A very intense roasted-nut smell shows it's the culinary kind. Some pure oils are deodorized and barely smell at all, but then the label should say so.

5. It absorbs and doesn't leave your skin sticky

Rub a drop on the back of your hand. Pure argan oil spreads easily, sinks into the skin in 1–2 minutes and leaves it velvety, not greasy. If a shiny, slippery, silicone-like layer or a heavy feeling stays behind, it may be blended.

6. It comes in a dark bottle

Light damages cold-pressed oils. Good argan is kept in brown or dark green glass, with a dropper or a tight cap. Clear plastic is a sign that quality wasn't a priority.

7. The price isn't too low

Pure cosmetic argan oil costs much more than ordinary oils, because of the work behind it. If 100 ml costs as much as a shower gel, something isn't right. Always compare the price per milliliter, not per bottle.

The "at-home" tests that don't work

A few quick tests circulate online. Don't rely on them:

  • The fridge test. Argan oil can turn cloudy in the cold, but so do other plant oils. It proves nothing.
  • The paper test. Any oil leaves a stain on paper.
  • "If it foams, it's fake." Oil doesn't foam, whether it's pure or not.

The ingredient label is still the only reliable check before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if argan oil is genuine?

Read the ingredient list. Pure argan oil has a single ingredient, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil. If silicones, fragrance or other oils also appear, it isn't pure.

Why does argan oil smell strange?

Cold-pressed argan has a natural, slightly nutty, plant-like scent. That's normal and fades once it absorbs. A rancid smell, like old oil, means it has oxidized.

What color is pure argan oil?

Golden yellow. Cosmetic oil is lighter in color, while culinary oil, made from roasted kernels, is darker and smells of roasted nuts.

Does pure argan oil solidify in the fridge?

It can turn cloudy at low temperatures, but other oils do that too. It isn't a reliable test. Store it at room temperature, away from light.

How long does argan oil last after opening?

A few months, if you keep it tightly closed, away from sun and heat. Check the date on the packaging and the scent: if it turns rancid, stop using it.

Is an oil "with argan" just as good?

It isn't the same product. Argan hair serums are usually silicone-based and contain little argan. We explain the differences in our article on pure argan oil, oils with argan and culinary argan.
